Three Types of Deck Foundations

Deck Block

This is the cheapest option. The deck is considered a “floating deck” and will move with the frost. However, once the frost is gone the deck returns to its original position. A deck on deck blocks cannot be attached to a house.

Screw Piles

It is rapaid installation and no need to excavate. Therefore, Screw-piles and helical anchors are well suited to projects located in remote areas where mobilization costs tend to be high and other construction support services are limited or may not be readily available.

Concrete footings

This is the ideal choice for a deck foundation. Footing material involves digging a hole and pouring concrete directly into the ground. Poured concrete footings can be very labor-intensive depending on where you live. Even though they take a lot of work to build, concrete footings are some of the strongest materials available. They are ideal for large decks that are high off the ground. They are also perfect for supporting the weight of a hot tub or other large items.

Fence Q&A

1. Do I need a permit to build a deck in Ottawa?
The requirement mainly depends on the height, size, and whether the deck is attached to the house. You may not need a permit if the deck is freestanding(not attached) and the height is 24 inches(60cm) or less above ground. If you deck is not larger than 108sqft(10 m²), you don’t need a permit.
2. Can a deck build on a sloped yard?
Yes, decks are ideal for sloped properties. We can design multi-level or elevated decks to maximize usability and aesthetics.
3. What maintenance does a deck require? How long will a deck last?
Wood decks need regular staining or sealing, while Composite or PVC decks require minimal maintenance—mainly cleaning.

Wood, Cedar decks can last 10 to 18 years with proper maintenance. Composite, PVC decks usually 25 to 50+ years with the lowest maintenance.
4. How much does it cost to build a deck in Modern Pro?
There is no fixed unit price of decks in Modern Pro. The total cost fo a deck depends on several components, including Ground preparation, Footings, Frames, Deckings, Skirtings, Steps and Railings.

Costs also vary depending on custom shapes, multi-level layouts, and design complexity. By breaking the project into these components, we can provide a transparent, detailed quote tailored to your property and vision, rather than a one-size-fits-all price.

5. What is the most important part of building a deck?
A strong foundation and framing are critical to ensure your deck is safe, level, and built to last.

We recommend using concrete footings instead of deck blocks in most cases. Concrete footings provide a stronger, more stable, and long-lasting foundation that can better support the weight of your deck and prevent shifting or settling over time. While deck blocks can be suitable for small or temporary decks, concrete footings are the preferred choice for durable, code-compliant, and safe decks that last for decades.
